My deepest condolences to your family for your loss. I've known Michael for quite a number of years having first met him at a Bromeliad Society meeting at Burwood RSL. I later found he had a love for species orchids (and many other botanical curiosities) and he eventually joined Orchid SPECIES (NSW). Of late I would only see each other a few times each year, but as always, he was friendly and generous in sharing his knowledge. I'll miss him

I spent a lot of time at the Ferenczi house during my teenage years with Dora, Michael and Julie. I remember Michael sharing delicious continental cold meats and cheese for snacks, always joking around, telling me all about his greenhouse and being a taxi driver to Dora and me taking us to parties, beaches, shopping trips. Michael you will be missed. Deepest condolences to your family and friends. Lots of love.

My deepest condolences to Michael's family. I will remember Michael as a kind and generous friend. The following notice was released to his former colleagues at the University of Sydney.
To the members of the former School of Biological Sciences, I would like to convey the sad news of the passing of Mihaly (Michael) Ferenczi. Michael was a senior technical officer in the School of Biological Sciences for over 20 years. He started in Botany in 1986 and then moved to First Year Biology.
The following are the gathered memories of some of his friends from the old school. Many of us will remember him for the work he did in setting up and maintaining the glasshouse on Carslaw Level 4. Michael’s dedication to the maintenance of the glasshouse resulted in the collection of a wide variety of species, many of which were used by the school for teaching over the years. He would be found there most lunchtimes and was happy to show any visitors around the exotic collection. Michael was very generous and supplied the offices of Carslaw Level 5 with plants, which gave the offices a welcoming ‘biological/botanical’ feel. The technical team in Carslaw will remember Michael for his no-nonsense and efficient attitude to setting up the large first year labs. He was an avid recycler and was always looking at ways to reduce waste in the laboratory. With Michael nothing that could be reused, was wasted.
Michael had a love for growing and collecting rare and exotic bromeliads and readily exhibited his huge collection at events held by the Bromeliad Society of Australia. Michael was a linguist who spoke 5 languages (Hungarian, German, Italian, Spanish, English) and could speak but refused to speak Russian after growing up under Soviet rule in Hungary. We will always remember Michael as a friendly, passionate and cheeky smiley gentleman.

To Michael's family and friends,
Please accept the sympathy of the members of the Tropical Garden Society of Sydney. We feel for you dealing with his sudden loss and particularly at a time when it is not possible for many to assemble to celebrate his life.
We remember Michael for his great love of plants, especially Tillandsias and other Bromeliads and, of course, succulents and we valued his contribution at events such as plant fairs.
May he rest in peace.

You will be missed, Michael. Generous and thoughtful, we shared a passion for plants and travelling to their habitats in Latin America. I remember that bromeliad and anthurium-laden forest near El Cairo in Colombia where you thought you'd like to spend eternity. I sure hope some of your atoms make it there one day. Rest in Peace, my friend.

I want to send my sincere condolences to all Michael's family.
I would like to share that when I arrived in Australia, I was so lucky to meet him, we worked together in the first-year biology class. He was such a happy person, with a beautiful smile. I remember he loved so much his daughter and he was so proud of her :) also, he was a big fan of his plants ... once he won a prize :)!!! I got an orchid from his big collection. We used to listen to classical music while working at the lab and I felt so welcome to this country because of him. I will always remember those times. I want to say Thank you, Michael may heavens being your new garden :)
