My dear father-in-law was funny, warm, generous and never short of a story (and his stories were never short) and I loved them all. His stories of childhood as a war evacuee from London to the country were exciting, told as though they happened yesterday. His memory was so sharp and he always saw life through a positive lens. I will miss John and feel grateful to have known him.

When we finally did get together you were always honest, kind, helpful, understanding, and welcoming of me into your family. Dearest John So sorry I could not visit you in hospital to say a last goodbye. I would have thanked your for being such a loving husband to my dear sister. I know you fought hard to prolong your life over the past four years of daily kidney dialysis mainly because you could not bear to leave your darling Maggie. You told me that on several occasions over the years. May you now rest in peace, free of all suffering and worries. I will miss those big blue eyes and the many loving cuddles. With love. Both Margaret and John were very kind to me during their Adelaide years - at a time when I needed good friends they were there for me and I really appreciated it.I am sorry we saw so little of each other since the move away.
