Dearest Heather and Family,
I'm shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Hunter's Passing.
My soulmate Vera died on 21 July 2023. Only then can one know of the pain and ongoing grief, firstly Norm's sudden death and now Hunter.
Norm Rankin, Heather and I spent many happy years as teachers at Nowra High School. He was a great supporter of mine when I was an MP.
Norm loved a yarn, stories of his life as a child on the track droving. Later to become a great teacher, Bomaderry High School Headmaster and a wonderful, practical down to earth role model. A man of strength, principle and depth.
The Rankin family deeply respected and greatly missed.
Our hearts are with you.
John Hatton Senior.

I was privileged to work with Hunter during my time with Taronga and Western Plains Zoos and am saddened by this news. Hunter’s comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the history and financial aspects of both Zoos together with his exceptional interface with NSW Treasury was much relied upon and a key factor in the redevelopment of the Zoos and their ongoing success. Hunter spoke fondly of his Mother and was ever considerate of others. I was not only privileged, I was very fortunate and grateful to work with him.

I lived in the same small apartment block as Hunter in Undercliff St, Neutral Bay for more than two decades, through the 80s, the 90s & beyond. Everyone else came & went but we two stalwarts soldiered on. So many memories…in the early days, Hunter’s mum & dad would visit from time to time & his dad would pop into my tiny courtyard & get stuck into the weeding whilst offering me (still with a black thumb) tips on what to plant. Then my husband Graham moved in & the three of us were great mates. To say we are completely shell-shocked & heart-broken to hear of Hunter’s death is an understatement. We offer Kirsty & her family & Heather our deepest sympathy & our thoughts at this incredibly sad time. Graham & Lyn in Darwin.

Heather & Kirsty, I am very saddened for you both over the loss of Hunter. Many years ago our families were neighbours and friends. Hunter and I were in the same year at Bomaderry High until we completed the HSC in 1975. I do also remember having you Heather as my Art teacher and Norm was my Geography teacher. My 93 year old father Dick Hall asked me to send his condolences. Hunter will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. Thinking of you and Kirsty. I am deeply saddened to hear of Hunters passing. Always up for a laugh, he was a great boss for a very long time. His integrity left a lasting impression on me. Taken far too young.

So sad to hear this Hunter was such a lovely colleague of mine at Taronga for so many years. He helped me many times navigating budget and asset reports never never dismissing my questions and always having time to explain. He was a massive part of the zoo and I will always remember him as a true gentleman. RIP Hunter and my condolences to the family. Debbie Pritchard
