When I was 14, I spent the summer with Nan and Pop. Pop came and picked me up from Sydney airport, it was my first time travelling by myself, I was somewhat nervous. Pop was there waiting, cracked a joke about something and it immediately put me at ease, making me feel welcomed, protected. That entire 3 hour drive (and that whole summer, really) was full of warmth, wisdom and laughter.
It remains one of my most cherished memories of him.
I love you, Pop. Rest easy x

I first got to know Roy when he rang me and introduced himself and offered me a free holiday at the Federation of Community, Sporting, and workers Clubs resort at Fingal Bay. I had just resigned from as CEO of Mayfield RSL and in 1983 was extremely stressed having had a major fight with the club Treasurer over his lack of integrity. I was on the employment market and the although the offer turned out to be a plot to lure me to work with Newcastle Workers Club where I got to know about The Federation the holiday and Roy’s generosity was most welcome.
I had a great time at the Resort and got to know Roy and Maureen well. That started a great friendship. After a short while at The Workers, I found myself roped into becoming the Federations Treasurer and one of Roy’s bosses. I happily worked side by side with Roy until his retirement in 2000 after 23 Years of Stearling service as the Manager of the Fingal Bay Holiday Centre. While working closely with him and Federation Secretary Bob Broadfoot, the three of us and our wives became very close friends and had some great times together creating wonderful memories. Roy became loved by many of our Clubs and their members who would return to the resort year after year because of the great service and camaraderie they received at the Resort from Roy and his wonderful wife Maureen.
Amazingly, according to Roy it never rained at Fingal Bay, but he would allow that it had the occasional heavy sea mist. He had his Finger on the pulse of every event or happening in Fingal Bay and was instrumental in starting the Fingal Bay Sports Club. Bob and I and a lot of locals used to call him the King of Fingal Bay.
On my travels to Sussex Inlet in my role as CEO of the Federation I would call in to see Roy and Maureen at their retirement villa in Berry and it has been one of my great pleasures in recent years to be welcomed by them for a few hours and sit reminiscing over old times.
Roy, I loved you like a brother and will miss your ready smile and great wit.
Ken Conway
Chief Executive Officer
Federation of Community Sporting and Workers Clubs.
