Curtis I remember you as a cheeky boy, with a smile on your face and eyes shining brightly. You were loved by so many. Rest now young man, you have fought for so long. There is a new star in the night's sky, shining brightly watching over us all.

I’ve found it really hard to write this, Curtis was such a lovely soul, he was so loved by so many from the minute he was thought of, but no more so than your mum, Dad, Maddy and Hunter. You touched so many people with your gorgeous smile. I feel so very proud to have been a part of your life and as an honorary aunt.
Even though you’re physically no longer with us your soul is everywhere. From the beautiful sunrises and sunsets, to the smiles in your families eyes. You have grown your Angel wings and will protect those that loved you as much as they protected and loved you earth side. Rest in peace ❤️
Love Aunty Jo

A tribute to Lord Curtis Gilkes
(Owns part of Scotland making him officially a Lord)
I can’t put into words how much Curtis and his family coming into our life meant.
You see I got Lili’s diagnosis in a small room at the children’s hospital.
The words given were “most you can hope for she won’t drive a car, but most like her will be in a wheelchair with a feeding tube”
I felt lost, no one in Australia with Lili’s diagnosis I packed our bags and took off to South Carolina in The United States of America in search of someone who had the same diagnosis.
Hoping to see that Lili’s world wasn’t to be predicted by that moment in the hospital, l flew to South Carolina to be the only aussies in the room.
I thought to myself that’s ok, it just means my support will be on the phone and maybe emails as the internet wasn’t great back then … we are talking the dial up days …
On my last day excitedly a lady comes up telling me a lady from Australia had been in contact, with her son who was a similar age to Lili had been diagnosed.
Even turned out to be from the same town I had just left.
I flew home a few months later after living in England for a six months and Curtis was the top of my list to meet.
I’ll never forget the day we met because you see not only did I meet the amazing Curtis but I got to meet his beautiful family.
Meeting for the first time it felt like I had known Jane, Curtis’s mum for a life time. Tears were plenty and the weight of the unknown world ahead of us became less heavy.
We shared values, we loved our kids intensely and we wanted Lili and Curtis to have the good life just like their peers.
Who would have known heading to a Family Advocacy conference would have given us the trajectory for this good life we seeked.
The good life is no easy feat when the world still segregates and continues to be in much places not accessible.
Curtis attended the same school as his siblings and created a legacy in his school that we all belong. Abilities and disabilities we all have them but most importantly we are all equally valuable to society.
Curtis has left a forever legacy within his school, his community and thanks to Jane his mum in all her Advocacy roles sharing Curtis’s story throughout the state and Country.
Jane isn’t just a mum, she became an advocate, a nurse more qualified than most, a politician, an employer, a committee member, a teacher I could go on.
This life you see for myself and for Jane on the surface looks like rainbows and yes our kids are the shining light in that but what you don’t see was the careful articulated moves we make to ensure our kids were accessing what they deserved.
You don’t see the 300 school meetings, the bullying towards us as parents wanting the best for us kids but you know what?
I do know, Jane would listen to me while I cried and swore more than Billy Connelly and vice Versa in Jane’s fight for equality for Curtis.
I am so proud to call Jane my friend, I could write a series of books of all the things she did behind the scenes for Curtis.
She doesn’t ask for accolades, she did it because she loved Curtis and I know Curtis could see it.
Curtis had a smile that you can’t just make, it was his and so powerful he could light a room.
I have had the absolute pleasure of not only Jane but the friendship of Lili and Curtis. They didn’t need words their absolute originality and take on the world was the same. They don’t care what you look like, what you do for a living and what the current dramas are in our world.
They care only for your time, your smile and something to hold in their hands.
They have taught us more than anyone else in the world. They are our world along with their siblings they enrich our life for the better.
Curtis has the most loving family he struck gold having Maddie and Hunter in his life, all I seen over the years is pure love and his siblings always protecting and loving him.
I know they know they struck gold having him in their too and I can’t imagine their pain right now.
How can I forget Matt, Curtis’s Dad, you see we all met when I was still married we we’re all United families figuring out this unknown path.
But early on the path my partner couldn’t cope with the feat of the unknown world so I continued on my own but Matt he along with Jane continued to fight for the good life for Curtis. Matt continued to show up and demonstrate to others what a father should be in these circumstances
I was lucky enough to attend Curtis’s 18th last year and witness this beautiful family celebrate Curtis and you couldn’t find a better family to be a part of.
Lili and Curtis both had their first and last lol shot of baileys together, the little bad arse’s loved it too.
It will be a memory that I will treasure, both our kids sweet but really cheeky too.
To maddie and hunter, you guys are just the most amazing siblings to your brother. You both always did so much for Curtis and your mum always would tell me how proud she was of you both.
To Jane and Matt I don’t know what to say, this has broken my heart and I can’t imagine how you both would be feeling but just know we all love you guys and we are so grateful you made Curtis because the world is so much brighter because of Curtis and his story and his legacy he will be continuing to keep that shining
Now I can’t see my phone it’s got tears all over it love you all xx

My Curty bear, what an inspiration you are to us all. I am so very blessed & privileged to have been in your life since before you were born & to be a part of your family. I was given the honour of being your godmother & I loved you immensely. Watching your mum & dad constantly advocate for you, was nothing short of outstanding. You achieved so much my sweet boy & everything you did, you did with that beautiful smile on your face. You will be forever in my heart Curty & I will love you always & forever. Aunty Mel
