Joe was a kind man
I always felt welcome at his house
He and Leon allowed me to stay at there house during the week for almost 3 years when I had to work in Sydney at the start of my marriage to Christa.
We had some wonderful holidays in Europe and Asia. I went with Joe to his brothers 90th birthday in Germany. His family in Germany were very happy to see him there.
Joe will be missed by his family he was a kind and generous Father.
I will miss him.
My condolences and best wishes to Marcus, Christa and Leon.

Thank you to everyone for coming here today to farewell our wonderful Dad.
Dad and I were reminiscing a few weeks ago and we spoke of many of the things he had experienced in his life. In 1973 he took the whole family to Germany to meet our grandmother Oma Loni and all our many uncles, aunties and cousins. It was the best holiday ever! We were there for 9 weeks and did some travelling around Germany with all the family in an old red and white Combi. We spoke of his solo camping trips around Australia in his old Ford, his favourite place of all being Broome. Also his many trips to see his family in Germany, a trip to China and to Bali with me and Chris for Kiera and Adams wedding.
In 1953 Dad had left Germany to follow his brother Norbert to Australia where he'd heard it was wonderful there. I asked Dad if he was happy that he moved to Australia. He said "YES, it was the best thing I ever did". Dad loved the wide, open spaces, the bush and especially the beaches. I have memories of Dad taking us to Cronulla beach on most weekends. He used to worry my Mum because he would go out really far into the ocean, further than most. He did love adventure. He enjoyed wind surfing and on his 60th birthday he went bungee jumping, later birthdays he did Tandem skydiving, hang gliding at Stanwell Tops, a Balloon ride and climbed the Harbour Bridge.
Dad was a kind, loving and humble man. Always willing to help others and repaired many electrical items for friends and fixed all my stuff. When I bought my first car Dad showed me how to check the oil and water, change a tyre and repair a punctured tyre tube.
Dad was a keen photographer and bought me my first camera when I was very young, a Box Brownie which I still have. He showed me how to develop the film and process it into photos in the Dark Room that he had built in the garage. In the 1960's Dad also built a very large telescope that we used, to look at the moon and stars.
When I was in primary school Dad was digging out under the house to build a Rumpus Room. He did it all by hand, rendered the walls with concrete and the floor, put in windows and then when it was finished he brought a table tennis table. On many weekends Dad would say "anyone for Tennis?" just like in the Pluravit Vitamins Ad on the TV, which used to make me laugh. Dad taught me how to play table tennis in that Rumpus Room. I tried well into my late teens to try and beat him at it, came very close sometimes, but I never could beat him. Same with teaching me Chess, I never won against him then either. It was always fun though.
Dad loved his grandkids and great grandkids and when they were young he often took Luke and Jason to different places and camping in the family tent. I’m sure they have great memories of their Opa and I know he loved them very much. As we all loved him. He was the best Dad and Opa in the world. Rest in peace Dad.

It is with great sadness that on this day we remember Uncle Joe and by the same token it is a day of celebration to cherish the memories of such a great person.
Uncle Joe was such a kind giving man and we can all learn and thank him.
I remember the many things he taught me when I visited on school holidays, learning how to develop photographs and star gazing on home made equipment. Tonight I will be looking up at the stars and know that the newest and brightest will be looking back at me.
Christa , Leon and Marcus my sincere condolences for your loss.
Join, me in looking at the stars and smile as we know he will be smiling back at us.
Kind Regards
Sean Burk

From his niece Vivienne Mitchell
Uncle Joe was a lovely, kind and generous man who is thought of very fondly in our family. Despite the Bourgeon family living far away in Sydney, the regular contact between the Bourgeons and the Burks, Keanes and Smiths, all in Tasmania ensured that the families remained close over the course of our lives.
Uncle Joe would travel to Tasmania for any important family event that I can remember, whether a sad occasion like our mum (his sister in law) Rita’s funeral nearly 40 years ago or a happy celebration like another sister in law Yvonne’s 80th birthday just a few years back. Whenever family would travel to Sydney to visit, they would always be warmly received and Joe would be an excellent host, showing them around the sights of Sydney. My photo albums are scattered with a variety of photos of such connections although more often than not, Uncle Joe would be the one taking the photos.
Sending love and heartfelt sympathy to our dear cousins Christa, Marcus and Leon and their families. Uncle Joe will be sadly missed and always remembered with love by you all and also by us as part of his wider family. Here are some of the many photos of Uncle Joe’s time with his wider family.

We were lucky enough to meet Josef at a family BBQ at Christas a few years ago. Christa and Chris are both very dear friends of ours. Josef sat and reminisced about his hometown in Germany and his beautiful family. His beaming smile lit up the room. The love he had for his family shone through. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bourgeon family at this difficult time.....Helen and Phillip Brooks

Mr Bourgeon (could never call him Joe) was a beautiful man both inside and out. He gave more than he received.
He became a big part of my life just living down the road in Caringbah as a young girl.
Christa to this day is my oldest and best friend.
Mr Bourgeon had a car - we didn't - so he always included me in the family outings - and there was many - so very lucky.
Rest in peace no more pain - if we could all be a little bit like this man the world would be a better place.
