Very early in his engineering career at OTC(A) Jeff worked for me. Whilst the details of the work have faded with the years, I recall Jeff as a very pleasant young man and an enjoyable colleague. I vividly recall that he was a dedicated member of a volunteer bushfire brigade on the Upper North Shore, and whenever a fire broke out in that area he had to leave the office and rush to join his brigade. As I recall, in the winter he spent quite a lot of time with the brigade in maintaining the equipment and in practicing fire fighting. May he rest in peace!

Jeff remains in my thoughts as an inspiring and gentle man who always had time with a kind and thoughtful word to a young lad from regional QLD. Despite OTC being the link, I never had the pleasure of interacting in the workplace. It was always the times on caving trips for which I will remember Jeff. Quite an impression considering I left for London 34 years ago and still remember him like it was yesterday. A little of me has passed with him.

A friend since I worked with him in OTC on my arrival in Australia at the end of 1970. I fondly remember the bush walks; the abseilling; the dry humour; and the BBQ's in Normanhurst where a Kookaburra stole a steak off my plate. Also the 10 years of family holidays between Xmas and the New Year at the Myall Lakes.
A natural leader, Jeff was also a mentor to all the kids who were lucky enough to join him in the bush. They learnt many things - including how to spotlight spiders' eyes at night and to avoid the "swamp" on the way to the long-drop dunny at the Myalls..
An early adopter of useful gadgets, I remember the trouble we got into on a long bushwalk in the Wollemi National Park visiting a hanging sandstone bridge - long since fallen down. Always trusting in Jeff's leadership, we were happy for him to navigate a more direct route to our destination using one of the first mobile GPS receivers to be sold in Australia.
Thrilled to be walking over land that had probably never felt the tread of a human foot, we were on top of the world. Literally as it turned out, because after several kilometres we arrived at the brink of a very large and long escarpment that stood between us and our destination! Google maps had not yet been invented.....
We eventually climbed down and reached the bridge but, by the time we got back to our cars (via the usual route) it was around 10pm at night. I recall we arrived at our homes at midnight - much to the consternation of the partners who had not joined us on the walk.
Yes, the Jeff we all knew and loved before Parkinsons wreaked its remorseless havoc on his nervous system, will remain in our memories for ever. Rest in Peace.

Good memories of sharing time with Jeff both at work and on a few of his less strenuous outdoor activities. We well remember his hospitality and his dry sense of humour. Heartfelt condolences from Peter and Margaret Mills at Warrawee

Besides the fact Mum and Dad took me to the Myall Lakes every year, I would say it was Jeff who got me fully hooked on wildlife and nature. To this day I attribute my love of nature and conservation to all Jeff taught me on our annual holidays to the national park. Right now, as i take time to write on this wall, I am at a National Park teaching 3 city kids just the same. His legacy lives on. Thankyou.

Jeff loved a bargain! I recall back in the 70s he introduced several of us to the then quite novel concept of "diminishing term insurance" to cover our wives during those critical few years when they alone were looking after the kids while their partners were working. It was really reassuring to have such cover and a heck of a lot cheaper than the traditional "whole of life"! And I'll always remember what a jovial and constructive team player Jeff was in the OTC workplace.

Ambling along through "Tracksidia Grandiflora" to cracks and holes in rock walls, abseiling down Cascading waterfalls into Canyons of unimaginable beauty. Floating, swimming and walking through 'Wonderlands' few people get to experience. Thank you Jeff for some of life's Best experiences. To you, Marilyn, Stephen, Gregory and families, a sad lost but a man no longer in pain, my condolences. Wendy Campbell

As well as an excellent and well respected engineer, Jeff was an avid photographer leaving a legacy of thousands of images documenting a rich life well lived. He excelled in many outdoor activities including caving, abseiling, canyoning, bushwalking, sailing and camping to name a few. His wonderfully dry humour and repartee was legendry. Asked about lunch as the golden arches loomed up he quickly remarked “McDonalds is OK but food is better”. He was never short of ideas to entertain the children. Now grown up they remember his flying foxes, aquatic egg throwing competitions and night time rambles through the bush. His long battle with Parkinsons has now ended but we will always treasure the many happy memories we have of our good friend Jeff. John, Ruth, Stephen and Christopher.
