I first met David in 1980 when I started working at CSIRO Cloud Physics Division at Marsfield. David became a much-valued friend and colleague
David was a thorough gentleman and very talented in his work. I can remember David helping me and other colleagues out solving problems in our research projects, he was always prepared to come forward and help with a great passion for his work.
Our families have kept in touch having been part of the Cloud Physics social gatherings over the years.
Our kindest thoughts go out to Helen and Sarah during this difficult time.

I first met David as the adored father of my daughter Melissa’s beloved school chum, Sarah, when they were students at Cheltenham High. I also met, Helen his beloved wife, I found David to be a quiet and gentle man who loved his family and was quietly proud of them and their achievements. I also believed he had a very cheeky sense of humour. At this very
extremely sad time it is a relief to know that his suffering has ended. May he travel with Angels to be welcomed with joy by the loved ones gone before, to his Heavenly Home.

Dearest Helen and Sarah,
What a fine man we have lost! Such a gentle, kind and wise person. So talented and knowledgeable. I remember the pride and passion he displayed when he spoke of his CSIRO work. It was clear that he was very highly regarded by his colleagues. I was in awe of his exceptional technical skills. I remember his love of the natural world, not least his great knowledge of birdlife. I recall with fondness the times as a young teenager I joined David and Pop on some early morning (VERY early!) fishing trips on the waters of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park in Pop's little tinny. David loved the tranquil beauty of those sunrise cruises. I remember his understated passion for the activities he enjoyed, such as his love of croquet in recent years. He was so clever at that sport! I remember most of all his deep and abiding devotion to you two ... the apples of his eye!
Our hearts ache for you both and our love reaches out to you as we bid a tender farewell to a very special man.
We smile and share in your delight as we recall many happy memories of his life well lived.

Dear Aunty Helen and Sarah,
Thinking of you both and reflecting on all of Uncle David's special qualities. I remember many special occasions at Beecroft and always looked forward to our times together. I remember Uncle David having a quiet and calming influence over me. A man who was kind, gentle and nurturing. As a small child , Uncle David always made me valued, included and safe. And now as an adult in a world of two minute sound bites and instagram posturing, I am even more inspired by his traditional family values, authenticity, meaningful conversations and quiet strength of character. I am glad he is finally at peace and will always cherish the special times we shared.
Thinking of you both with love, Debbie Stone

Dear Helen and Sarah,
I was very sorry to hear that your lovely husband and father had died. Such a quiet, reflective man… I recall from Philosophy at U3A, particularly. And I read the heartfelt note from ADFAS about his contribution there.
I came across these pics from the 30th Anniversary Dinner and thought you might like them.
Thinking of you both and sending every good wish at this very sad time.

Dear Sarah,
I'm really sorry to hear about David. Your Dad was a very talented and dedicated technician, for whom no task was too difficult. In another world of unlimited opportunity, he could easily have been a research scientist. But above all, he was a good man, unflappable and supporting.

Dear Helen and Sarah,
It was very sad to read of David’s death in this morning’s Herald. My deepest sympathy to you both. I hope his suffering was not too extreme but it is such a nasty disease that this is probably unlikely…
I have been trying to remember how many years David worked with me -must have been about 10 I think. In all that time, I never saw him become visibly upset or cranky although I am sure I would have given him cause to be at times. The other things I remember with pleasure are his inventiveness and skill in construction and his complete reliability in making measurements. In a fairer world he would have become a successful scientist.
I will continue to think of you in this difficult time.
With my best wishes,
Keith (Dr Keith Big)

Nowra Croquet Club is saddened by the loss of David after a long illness.
David started playing croquet in June 2007 and during this time as a club member he served on the Committee and as Vice President. He gave great importance in the functioning of the club.
David was always there to set up courts, attend to the shade cloth for the comfort of players during competitions and social play.
He would also forgo playing in major events as he tended to the computer to record the results for those participating. David was a representative for our division 1 Pennants team. He took great pride in his uniform and with his quiet, friendly nature was well respected by other members.
The Club sends its condolences to Helen, Sarah, and family.

We were so privileged to have known David as a friend in the last few years. We shared stories of growing up in a less complicated time and heard anecdotes about his younger life and his interesting career. We found him to be open, kind, quiet and a truly gentle man. We remember his interest in train trips, tennis and croquet and current affairs. He will be truly missed by his dear wife, Helen, and Sarah, his beloved daughter, and by his many friends. We keep David and Helen and Sarah in our hearts.

David was a long time family friend since he, Helen and Sarah lived across the back fence in Eastwood fifty years ago.
We have regularly shared in his life and interests since then. David was a quiet, thoughtful and reliable friend and we will miss him.
We send our love and thoughts to Helen and to Sarah whom we have always thought of as our fourth child.
